Basically everything I've ever felt about the Twilight series
I’ve always been a bit disturbed by the dynamics of the relationships presented in Meyer’s books (not just the Twilight series, but also The Host.) This “fetishism” of Mormonism (as Laci Green puts it) manifests in the ideology revolving around love and sex amongst many adolescent females.
No, Edward is not the perfect man. No, this is not the perfect couple. It’s actually one of the most potent examples of abuse I’ve read as of yet. Even in fourth grade when I was introduced to the first novel, I noticed something odd about the way Bella just accepted everything Edward told her, unfazed by his shady “intensity” and hunger for her and extreme overprotectiveness, simply because he was just so beautiful. She came crumbling down as soon as he went away, with no friends left and a less-than-adequate family relationship. And the only person that kept her from completely losing it was, of course, another love interest.
Honestly this complex goes beyond shallowness. It’s dangerous. And it’s being presented as love.
The related video is even more interesting and goes a bit deeper into the religious influences http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwlcNgEuPkc
I guess it’s a comfort, perhaps a sense of self control, doing worse damage to yourself than the world will ever dare inflict.
